The Rumsey Hall Library is more than shelves of books, it’s a vibrant space for discovery, creativity, and connection. Students are encouraged to read widely and think deeply. In an age of constant digital distractions, our library provides a calm, screen-free environment where students can focus, reflect, and explore the world through stories and ideas.

Reading at Rumsey supports:

  • Academic Success: Strengthens fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking across all subjects
  • Curiosity and Joy: Encourages reading for pleasure and personal interest
  • Media Literacy: Teaches students how to evaluate and interpret information in a digital world
  • Community Connection: Shared reading experiences bring students and teachers together in meaningful ways

Library Traditions:

Celebration of Reading

After winter and summer breaks, the entire school comes together to share books they’ve read. Through small-group discussions, creative projects, and community activities, students reconnect through literature and rediscover the joy of reading.

Book Fest

One of the most beloved Rumsey traditions, Book Fest is a multi-week celebration of reading that begins with Morning Meeting book previews and ends in multi-age group discussions, projects, and presentations. Every student chooses a book and participates in thoughtful, cross-grade conversations that deepen understanding and build community.

Book Fest Café

To kick off Book Fest reading, students visit the cozy Book Fest Café in the library, which is complete with hot chocolate, whipped cream, and marshmallows. It’s a warm invitation to dive into a new book and begin the journey.

Book Fair

Held during Grandfriends’ Day, the annual Book Fair transforms the library into a lively bookshop with help from our partners at Riverbend Bookshop. Students and visitors browse, purchase, and celebrate books while building their home libraries and supporting the school community.
